It's no surprise that they're so popular, and even less surprising that the Caribbean is such a favorite destination for wedding planners. Great climate, relaxed atmosphere, friendly people ... it's all here, right? Well, if you're thinking of getting married in Puerto Rico, you get all that and a little bit more. There are dozens of venues and hotels offering a beachfront wedding that will take your breath away ... but here are some other unique options for where to host your Puerto Rican destination wedding.

1. Old San Juan
There's an undeniable romance about getting married in Old San Juan. This small, romantic town has legends that span over four hundred years, and its cobblestone streets have seen their share of love stories. When you look at the beauty of this city, it's not so surprising. Spanish architecture, brightly painted buildings, and two of the oldest churches in the Americas combine to offer a tempting package. Plus, your photographer will drool over the countless locations for picture-perfect shots of the bride and groom.

Hotel Pick: El Convento, one of the best boutique hotels in Puerto Rico.
Where to Tie the Knot? El Catedral de San Juan, an elegant cathedral that hosts the most exclusive and elite weddings on the island.

2. The Botanical Gardens
The University of Puerto Rico's botanical is a 300-acre park with flora from all over the world. Naturally (no pun intended), you can imagine how beautiful a wedding here can be. Whether you choose the Japanese-inspired garden with its wooden bridge and water lilies, or the elegant Monet Garden, or for larger weddings, an expansive, open field surrounded by manicured vegetation, this is the place to get married if you love the outdoors. Waterfalls, lakes, fountains, sculptures, and some 63 species of birds are among the extras at your disposal if you choose this venue.

Where to Tie the Knot: The loveliest location for an intimate wedding is the Monet Garden.

3. El Yunque
Sticking to "green" weddings, you won't find a lush environment than El Yunque, Puerto Rico's famed tropical rainforest. You can tie the knot atop a mountain, by a forest pool, or at a nearby resort with dramatic views of the verdant landscape. Either way, if you've got an adventurous party, I highly recommend a post-reception field trip to La Mina Falls, where you can all jump in for a refreshing dip under a natural waterfall to wipe away the stress of the wedding!

Hotel Pick: The Rio Mar Beach Resort is the closest full-service resort to the rainforest.

4. On An Island
You can leave the mainland Puerto Rico and get married on one of its neighboring islands: Vieques or Culebra. Culebra is the choice for a more rustic setting. On Vieques you can get a bit more lavish with your plans. Either way, you get an island that combines untamed vegetation and unspoiled beaches. Plus, you get a different vibe altogether, one that leaves the bustle of San Juan behind and transports you (and your party) to a quieter, more relaxed environment. On Culebra, you have the benefit of renting a mansion or two for your wedding party, whereas in Vieques, you have a few beautiful hotels to choose from.

Hotel Pick: The Inn on the Blue Horizon is a romantic gem set on a bluff overlooking the ocean.

5. In a Cave
I realize that getting married in a cave sounds a bit vampiric. But I'm talking about the Camuy Caves here, a natural subterranean wonderland that's one of Puerto Rico's best attractions. This is the third largest system of its kind in the world, with individual chamgers as large as 200 feet high and capable of accommodating an office building (so your wedding party should be plenty comfortable, no matter how big it is!).

Hotel Pick: The Horned Dorset Primavera is a small boutique hotel that's elegant, chic and private ... perfect for a bride and groom to get away after the reception.

Mojito Kit As A Wedding Favor

The Favors

Puerto Rico is known for it's rums so what better favor than a mojito kit. Check out the picture and description below from Christie and Owen's wedding. I found this great idea on The Knot.

“Our signature drink was the mojito -- Owen’s favorite drink,” Christie says. The couple gave their guests “mojito kits,” with muddlers and a drink recipe. Christie packaged the glasses with brown ribbon and labels with their logo, a copyright symbol, as Christie explains, “A ‘C’ inside an ‘O."

Here are a few resources for the kit;

Ingredients

10 fresh mint leaves
1/2 lime, cut into 4 wedges
2 tablespoons white sugar, or to taste
1 cup ice cubes
1 1/2 fluid ounces white rum
1/2 cup club soda

Directions

Place mint leaves and 1 lime wedge into a sturdy glass. Use a muddler to crush the mint and lime to release the mint oils and lime juice. Add 2 more lime wedges and the sugar, and muddle again to release the lime juice. Do not strain the mixture. Fill the glass almost to the top with ice. Pour the rum over the ice, and fill the glass with carbonated water. Stir, taste, and add more sugar if desired. Garnish with the remaining lime wedge.

I know it's hard work but as a wedding planner, I have to do constant research and the W was high on my research list. My husband, 13 year old daughter, niece and I all visited the W for 2 days and were very impressed! The beaches (there are 2) are clear and blue. They are calm enough not to worry about the kids, but small waves rolled in constantly which the girls loved. The hotel offers large inner tubes which can be used at the beach or pool and we all loved those. The beaches are also great for snorkeling. If you are a guest you have access to complimentary masks and fins. The pool is not only beautiful it is relaxing and a great place to have a mojito and lunch. When evening approached we played pool, had a wonderful dinner and sat by the fire pit while we listened to music. The girls were exhausted from the days events and were in bed sleeping by 10pm... gotta love that. Overall I must rate this hotel a 5 out of 5. It hits all the right notes - beauty, activities, peaceful, good service and clean! A must for any traveler!

I am often asked... "When is the best time of year to have my destination wedding in Puerto Rico?" Since timing is everything, here is the scoop on year round weather conditions in Puerto Rico and the best time of year for great deals.

Winter - January - March

It's very expensive this time of year because it is a very popular time to visit. It is dry season, the weather is sunny and in the 80's, the kids are off for winter recess and most Northerners want to escape the cold. Book early!

Spring - April - June

As soon as Easter is over many hotels and wedding venues lower their rates dramatically. The weather is still gorgeous - dry, sunny and 80's. Again, book early!

Summer - July - September

This is hurricane season (June 1 - November 30), and so rates are at their lowest, although your chances of being hit are statistically slim, look into travel insurance. And don't worry as long as you and your fiance are flexible, most hotels and venues offer a backup location in case of inclement weather.

Fall - October - December

As fall enters, humidity levels drop and the chance of afternoon showers are slim. Temps are warm, and rates are affordable as long as you stay away from holiday weekends including Thanksgiving and Christmas as these are peak times.

I came across this idea in Destination Wedding Magazine and I absolutely LOVE it! A beautiful couple by the name of Hope Hollkamp and Jacob Theisen were featured in the Jan/Feb issue of of Destination Wedding Magazine due their amazing destination wedding in Duck Key, Florida. Each guest was asked to sign a congratulatory message on a seashell as they walked into the ceremony. The seashells were then incorporated into the sand ceremony when the couple poured their sand over the shells. What a great memento to have. A Bride's Best Friend ~ My Wedding Workbook

Today's brides are more inclined to hire wedding planners who are value-driven, more willing to collaborate and who provide day-of-wedding packages, according to a survey conducted by My Wedding Workbook Pro - the wedding planning software for bridal consultants.

When brides were asked about the top factors they would consider when hiring a wedding planner, 71.9% named cost as the leading factor. In addition, of the respondents who did not hire a consultant, 74.7% stated that they decided against hiring a planner because it was simply "too expensive."

"Most newly engaged brides assume that hiring a wedding planner will dramatically drive up the price of their wedding," said Jeff Kear, co-owner of My Wedding Workbook Pro and My Wedding Workbook the online wedding planner software for brides. "But consultants can actually reduce vendor costs in lots of ways and make sure couples get what they pay for. So consultants who can demonstrate the value they deliver - especially during a recession - can really put themselves at an advantage."

The current recession also has influenced what types of services brides want from consultants, with more than 90% of brides responding that they would only consider hiring a planner for day-of-wedding services. Another big expectation that brides have of planners is the ability to negotiate very favorable rates with vendors, with 55.6% of respondents listing this as a critical attribute.

Once you get beyond concerns of cost, what brides really want from their wedding planner is great personal chemistry and a collaborative relationship. Indeed, 56.9% of brides listed this as a top factor in choosing a consultant, and another 32.3% want a partner who can help relieve the stress of managing every detail.

"What we discovered is that a bride doesn't necessarily want someone who just comes in and takes over," said Kear. "She wants a partner who will listen to her, work with her and share her vision. She wants someone who will give her great advice and who will assume the responsibilities that she doesn't have the time or desire to shoulder. Any consultant who brings this kind of flexibility and sensitivity to the table is positioned for success."

However, there are still many brides who, regardless of the cost of hiring a planner, would prefer planning their wedding themselves. Of the brides surveyed, 44% listed themselves as being a "do-it-yourself type person," 33.1% did not anticipate needing much help and 25.2% said they were not comfortable handing over wedding planning responsibilities.

"When you get right down to it, hiring a wedding consultant is a very personal decision. Some brides have looked forward to planning their wedding for so long that for them it would be unconscionable to ask someone else to do it," said Kear. "Others place their main priority on getting married but would rather leave all the details up to someone else. And then there's a ton of brides who are somewhere in between. The wedding consultants who can serve all those in-betweeners are the ones who will have very busy practices."

Fun Favor/Escort Card Idea

Brides and I are always looking for unique escort card ideas and fun, useful favors. When you can combine the two it's twice as good.

Heide & Paul's wedding was full of lovely, fun, money saving and unique ideas. One that I loved in particular was the favor. Heide & Paul wanted to give their guests a taste of the best rum the world has to offer, Puerto Rico's Bacardi Rum. So off I went to the Bacardi factory for my research (it's a dirty job but someone has to do it) and to pick up Bacardi nips (I must suggest if you are vacationing in Puerto Rico it's a fun tour. It is interesting, they offer two drinks of your choice at the end and best of all it is completely free). She wanted two nips, one dark and one light, for each guest (they also have flavored nips). We attached them to each other with a pretty ribbon and double sided tape. She made adorable tags that said "Some Puerto Rico Spirit" and they were placed at each guests table setting. When the guests arrived to their seat they all commented on how cute the favors were and how wonderful it was not to have to pack one more item in their luggage. Then I thought what a great favor/escort card. Same idea, you would add the table name/number to the tag. Super cute and you eliminate one extra item on your reception list.

Below is an email I received from a bride I am currently assisting in creating the wedding of her dreams. ... Something for you maybe to blog about... In trying to save money I found that the cost for printing a return address as well as a RSVP address on every envelope would take hours to do by hand or cost money if you were hiring a calligrapher. My printer wanted to charge anywhere from $100-200 more to print my return/rsvp address on my main envelope flap and RSVP envelope. So I choose to get creative and have a stamp made for $18. With shipping it comes out to $23.. but I can have this stamp for as long as I am in this home.

I picked the "Curly" stamp from Paperwink...

But I saw a ton of them on our favorite site Etsy. Like these cool ones...

Just tell your brides if they are using them for their RSVPs they should ask to have a larger stamp made... mine are 2.8" x 1.75". But over all these pretty return stamps would be great gifts for newlyweds OR for anyone with a new home... or a new last name!

One question I get asked a lot is...

"What would you suggest as a wedding favor? How should we display them?"

I came across this idea in Martha Stewart Weddings Magazine and fell in love with it. This is perfect for a destination wedding. It is both timeless and new, create a favor cake with buttercream-colored boxes (ivory, white and aqua work nicely too) and a topper of millinery or paper flowers. Inside, nestle Mantecaditos (sugar cookies) which are a delicious, light, traditional cookie in Puerto Rico. They can be flavored with coconut, almond, lemon or amaretto. And guests don't have to pack an extra item in their luggage. It can be their midnight or breakfast snack after partying all night long. Ask a calligrapher to make a sign with your initials or monogram. Stack boxes in tiers on a square cake plate; add picot ribbon and flowers to top. Shells and pearls would also add a decorative romantic look.

Life is full of little gems! Finding one that you want to share with the whole world is unique. I heart Ouma because she is truely an artist. There is nothing like putting on one of her dresses, it makes you feel like a movie star. Her fabulous take on ballerina style dresses makes me want to run to my closet and play dress up. Her dresses can make you feel like a little girl playing dress up. I bought two of her dresses recently for my wedding. I wanted to feel extra special at my rehearsal dinner. I wanted to wear a dress I would never forget. I wanted to slip into a dress that would be timeless, unique, unforgettable to anyone who passed by me. I put it on and never wanted to take it off. I love fashion! I love to look just a little different from the rest. I'm willing to take chances on designers who share my passion for twists on the norm. Legal Marriage Requirements for Puerto Rico

Easy as 1, 2 ,3...... Come to Puerto Rico to get married without complications!

There is no waiting period, however there are blood test requirements. You will need a birth certificate and a valid form of photo I.D. such as a driver’s license. Non U.S. citizens will need a passport.

If you have been previously married, you will need divorce papers or death certificate and if there are children, you will need birth certificates for each one.

You may use blood tests for Syphilis, Gonorrhea and Clymidia from a licensed lab in the U.S. but it must be done within 14 days of the wedding date. A registered doctor in P.R. will need to sign and certify the blood test and medical certificate for a $100.00 fee.

Couples must then visit the Demographic Registry office to present the medical certificate for validation for a $20.00 fee plus purchase a $5.00 stamp to officiate the marriage license after ceremony.

You will receive you marriage certificate in the mail within 10 days of the wedding.
